Chantal Joffe. (I haven't seen it)

Has anybody seen her show at Victoria Miro? I wont be able to and i was curious to know what does anybody think of it? Looks good on the website and in great a book you can flick through, linked to from the VM site, but no substitute for the real thing especially with a painter like her. I didn't li...

Re: Awful Interview with Lisa Yuskavage

Two things occur to me reading this. One is, I can't think of a European painter who does something similar to Currin or Yuskavage. I mean paint technically excellent but otherwise dull paintings and make a stellar career out of it? I think here we prefer the less polished but more open-ended. The o...

Re: Where are all the great painters?

Would you not say that western art followed a natural progression which led up to modernism and a situation where no artists were interested in producing 'great' paintings in the way that Rembrandt was great. Like, Picasso could have painted like Ingres if he had wanted to kind of thing. People will...

Re: True Detective

I find it a quite bizarre show in terms of narrative structure or whatever. The first 3 were quite dull and clichéd, i thought, then it kind of took off in number 4 when one of the guys went under cover, kind of climaxed in the next one and has been drifting on since then. Like a soap opera but with ...

Re: perfect burger

Actually, regular burger buns are fine and for stuff on top i'm keeping it simple... ketchup and grilled onion. In Australia a fried egg on top is very popular i have heard. They call it a 'spider'.

for bread, I'd slice some ciabatta length ways, put a little bit of olive oil on it and put it face down in the griddle pan the meat was just done in. I think.

Re: midnight in paris by woody allen

that was Hannah and her Sisters, which I really liked. i thought Michael Caine was ok in it.
The list of shame for Woody Allen impersonations would have to be topped by Whatshisname Cussack and by Brannagh.
Opposite end of the spectrum was Sean Penn in Sweet 'n' Lowdown (which I thought was great).

Brains - Simon Bill

I'd recommend this. The narrator is a 40ish piss-head not-so-successful painter doing a year long residency at a neurology clinic. Genuinely funny episodes alternate with fascinating info on how the human brain works.

A Crisis Of Brilliance - David Boyd Haycock

This is a group biography of about 5 painters who went to the Slade at the start of the last century. Stanley Spencer, Dora Carrington, Paul Nash and all. These dudes took themselves seriously, were comically passionate and were fond of suicide. it's good.
