I happened to watch James Kalm's video of this show the other day, and was a little surprised at Grotty's direction - big gestural-but-schematic arcs of mainly tertiary colours - lotta white. Derived from tribal masks - stylised faces. I don't know, I suppose if I just saw one or two in a group show I might like them, but when you see whole galleries loaded with methodical variations, I get that old showroom-sinking-feeling...
