A rare historical movie and artist biopic that makes the past seem really like another country. Although genius always seems to permit the artist to be a total asshole (do people now confuse the one with the other?), for once you feel the difference in the nature of being an artist (the making, selling, and conceiving of pictures) 200 years ago. The contorted allusive speech, varied accents (poor Ruskin gets a bum deal), skin, rough loving relations, and dirt make you feel like the characters are speaking a foreign language, although the words are intelligible. It's entrancing and of course a great contrast to the idea of watery coloury pretty landscapes. Bravo. Mike Leigh's best film.
