The witches of eastwick by John Updike

having read the sequel first I was a little underwhelmed by this, straining sometimes, and the characters (women for once at the forefront of an Updike book) oddly flat and differentiated (except in hair colour etc). He manages to make magic earthy and real which is some achievement.
