Panels and Performative Lectures

7th November, Saturday
11.00am – 5.00pm,
Deptford Lounge Meeting rooms 1 & 2 and Library
(No registration required, seating is on a first come first served basis and subject to capacity)
Please note performances will also take place in the Foyer during the day.

11.00am – 12.30pm Performative Lectures and Curators Conversation: Anna Macdonald,  Linda Aloysius, and curators: Something Human (Alessandra Cianetti & Annie Jael Kwan) and Vipash Purichanont

This session presents two performative lectures by experienced artists and art lecturers who have developed a body of works around the concept of social heath care, wellbeing, femininity and motherhood. It will follow with a curators’ conversation that focuses on introducing the programme to the public, self-reflecting on the week-long process, and attempting to locate the project in the cultural landscape of live art today.

Art, Containment and Care, Anna Macdonald
This talk explores the psychodynamic notion of ‘holding’ (Bion, 1965) as a form of care, in the production and reception of art. It focuses on a moving image project entitled Falling for everything* that was commissioned in 2014 by a woman called Lilli. Lilli was dying, and wanted to explore this experience with an artist.

“F: is for Fragment, Linda Aloysius
Aloysius’ performative lecture “F” is for Fragment operates at the interstices of performance, language and sculpture, using a minimum of materials to illuminate and critique the ways in which our material and psychic worlds are currently fragmented, partitioned, segmented and “cut up”. Reading alternately to her sculpture “F” and to the audience, Aloysius implicates sculpture as a possible site of subjectivity whilst also critically positioning it as performative object and discursive tool.

1.15pm – 2.30pm Panel Discussion on Body, Care and the Performative: Ezzam Rahman, Martin O’Brien  ]performance s p a c e [ directors (Bean & Benjamin Sebastian)

The panel focuses on exploring various issues in live art about performance of care that takes place within the framework of the body, for example, a live art project that created from physical health problems or physical disability. It will highlight both individual practices and attempt to outline the socio-cultural context in which they are located.

2.30pm – 3.30pm: Panel Discussion on Motherhood and Care: Lynn Lu, Professor Carmine Pariante, Linda Aloysius

This panel discussion introduces a cross-disciplinary conversation between art and science. It explores the connection between maternity and creativity from the point of view of both experienced artists and a professional psychiatrist and researcher in the field of perinatal psychiatry.

3.30pm – 5.00pm: Panel Discussion on Anxiety, Movement and Care: Eleanor Turnbull, Deba Salim, Sikarnt Skoolisariyaporn, Hamish MacPherson

This panel discussion concentrates on the concept of care as an activity that inspires artistic practice or vice versa. The discussion draws together practitioners from various backgrounds including a conceptual artist, performance artist, art therapist and dance choreographer to share insights into their current practices which are driven by the concept of care.

The panels are part of Couldn’t Care Less, a week-long live art project curated by Something Human in collaboration with curator Vipash Purichanont. The project is presented in partnership with Deptford Lounge in Southeast London as the second edition of CCLAP (Cross Cultural Live Art Project) and will take place from 2nd to 8th November 2015.
