The Hype on African Art

The Hype on African Art

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye's nomination for the Turner Prize apparently is only part of a larger push. This German article tracks gongs handed out at Art Basel and lotsa museum manoeuvring for collections, acquisitions budgets all dedicated to 'African' art, which apparently doesn't mean the artist lives or works somewhere on the dark continent, or even was born there - instead it's a fairly dubious racial or ethnic thing.

The article's hinting that it's pretty superficial and that 'the market' is just looking for some suitable exotica to replace Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern or Islamic fads, but given the very real difficulties a lot of African nations face, you can't help feeling it smacks of exploitation as well.
