John Gage 1938 - 2012

Truly inspiring art historian, noted mostly for his books concerned with the use and meaning of colour. On a personal note, I wanted him as an examiner for my doctorate (many years ago now), but was refused by my supervisor, on the grounds that Gage had taken up with a much younger Australian woman (read slag) and 'now' had laughable ideas about Australian Aboriginal Art (contrary to his own). But it was Gage's enormous Cambridge prestige that I had in mind - that would have counted for plenty at my alma mater, not that my supervisor gave a shit for anyone's agenda other than his own.

But read Gage's Colour and Culture (Thames&Hudson) for the final chapters when he strips colour field painting bare. Minimalism indeed!
