(With the exception of Love & Death) Woody's best work was filmed in New York and made quite some time ago.
Out of all the films Woody has made that are set in London, I would say that the two least bad are "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger" and "Match Point".
Y.W.M.A.T.D.S is ok in places. Tony Hopkins is great as Alfie - a deluded old fool who leaves his wife for a young hooker. Alfie's ex wife Helana deals with the pain of rejection by getting close to a fortune teller and a widower who believes he can make contact with the dead. (Woody 's main point with this film is that delusion is bliss and that everyone who is happy is an idiot). It's not a great film but if you're a Woody fan you will enjoy the odd witty quip, the use of music and various other Woody-isms. There are many themes in this movie that Allen has explored before. For example: The tragi-comedy of an older guy regretting leaving his wife for a young woman is better done in Husbands and Wives. And, the failed writer living with the guilt of having success with someone else's work that people believe is better than his is better done is Bullets Over Broadway.
Wow - all of a sudden I'm set adrift on memory bliss...Husbands & Wives and Bullets Over Broadway really were such great films. I'll always love Woody for films like those. I also love Broadway Danny Rose, Radio Days, Hannah, Stardust Memories, Annie Hall, Manhattan etc. Does Woody have another film like that inside of him? I doubt it. But there were moments in Whatever Works, moments in Sweet & Lowdown, moments in Small Time Crooks and moments in Deconstructing Harry that made me feel it was still possible that Woody could be great again. Maybe my faith in him and by loyalty to him is just as laughable as the characters that Allen is sneering at in this film? We've all got to believe in something Woody!

Yes. It's a minor sadness that Woody got crap.

I liked this film and I liked a lot of Allen's recent output. Over the last ten or so years his films have become more waspish and cruel. I think his best film is Husbands and Wives. I can't stand the early unfunny comedies. I would soooooo much rather see Another Woman or Match Point than something like Sleeper or Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex.
