Patricia Heal: dartmoor
An installation of photographic works on canvas, video and sculpture
Stone Theatre, Waterloo, London
19 September – 14 November 2013

dartmoor brings together a multi-media photographic celebration of wild ponies of the Dartmoor National Park by New York-based artist Patricia Heal. Exhibiting at the Stone Theatre gallery in Waterloo, this exhibition will be the first show of Patricia’s work in the UK. Returning to her Devon roots, dartmoor represents Patricia’s passion for the magical ponies and misty, granite flecked moorlands of her childhood. Individual canvases and photographs printed on gold metallic dibond will be exhibited alongside a video installation and 4ft gold cube sculpture; all works are for sale. The exhibition will be open to the public from 19 September to 14 November 2013.

Patricia Heal is a highly acclaimed commercial and fine art photographer living and working in New York. She regularly exhibits at the Robin Rice Gallery, NY and is well known for her figurative and still life work. dartmoor marks a shift from previous work and embodies her life-long affair with the Dartmoor National Park and its inhabitants, the semi-feral native ponies. Having spent time recording the movement and native landscape of the ponies, the exhibition brings together Patricia’s passion for the animals with her individual photographic technique of altering and manipulating canvas prints. For dartmoor, Patricia has collaborated with Michael Reynolds, a New York-based creative director and curator.

The exhibition will include two large collages of individual works on canvas stitched together- Dartmoor MMXII and Dartmoor MMXIII, three large format photographs printed on gold metallic dibond, a video installation, and a magnificent 4ft gold dibond cube with an image printed on each surface. Each of the large canvas pieces is truly unique as Patricia alters the canvas with archival inks, stains, and charcoal to take on a worn, slightly distressed texture. In some cases, the works are then stitched together with horsehair. Additionally, the two large collages will be turned into wallpaper, adding a dynamic element to the installation.

Stone Theatre is an especially poignant venue for dartmoor as it is one of London’s largest showrooms for natural stone for interior and exterior architectural work and is committed to ethical sourcing. As an alternative gallery space, Stone Theatre provides a platform for challenging contemporary art, design and architecture and has hosted past exhibitions of artists including Maurice Cockrill RA, Jem Southam, Mike Perry and Paul Vanstone.

Together, Patricia Heal and Stone Theatre are motivated by the importance of man maintaining a sustainable and responsible approach to the land. dartmoor is, in part, inspired by the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT), whose mission it is to save the indigenous ponies from extinction. 5% from the proceeds of each sale will go to the DPHT and it is hoped that dartmoor will further raise the profile of the ponies and help secure their future.
