Suppose An Eyes is an international touring exhibition in three parts (exhibitions, events and a publication) by artists Lady Lucy, Jacqueline Utley and Flora Whiteley. The tour starts in Berlin at Galerie Futura, (11 May – 14 June 2013), then travels to Transition Gallery (20 July-11 August 2013) and Vane, Newcastle (18 September – 26 October 2013).

The starting point for the exhibition was a group reading of Gertrude Stein's modernist, abstract text, Tender Buttons (1914), which Stein conceived as a textual counterpoint to cubist painting. The impeding centenary of the text inspired the three artists to test its relevance to contemporary painting by using it as a catalyst, cross-referencing Stein's textual abstraction with the artists’ own practices.

Jacqueline Utley makes paintings of flowers and objects. A new series of works examines interior spaces. Recent selected group exhibitions include Stardust Boogie Woogie, Monika Bobinska, (2010), Prognostic Bridewell, APT Gallery (2010). She was an exhibition finalist in the fringemk painting prize, Milton Keynes (2009) and was selected for both Creekside Open exhibitions (2011). Her work was part of the group show BLANK PROMISCUITY part of Deptford X (2012).

Flora Whiteley's work explores objects and spaces containing shifting meaning and ambiguity, referencing the dreamlike, dramatic spaces found in film and theatre. Whiteley also performs in collaboration with the artist Darren Banks as ‘Better Place Portraiture’. Recent exhibitions include Luminous Language, Launch 18, New York (2013); The Nail, The Colours, The Mast, The Kotti-Shop, Berlin (2012); Better Place Portraiture: Phantasmagora, Barbican (2010).

Lady Lucy works amongst the realms of social practice, painting, drawing and moving image, exploring ideas of identity, biography and the act of naming. Central to her process is the creation of several series of works, which are edited and collaged from multiple points of fascination and interest found in the artist’s archive of second hand printed source material. Recent projects and exhibitions include: The Court Portraits, Spacex, Exeter (2010), Staff Portrait Studio, The Whitechapel Gallery (2011), Volunteers, Festival of Britain Southbank Centre (2011), Idle Worship, The Centre for Recent Drawing, London (2012).

The Exhibition ‘Suppose An Eyes’ has a programme of collaborative events with artists, writers and academics from each city. A salon/symposium will be held on Friday 26 July at Chelsea College of Art and Design. A collaborative publication has been produced to accompany the tour and will be available from each of the galleries and online.
