Schwartz Gallery Project Space presents work by Rowena Harris curated by Katarzyna Szydlowska and Konrad Schiller.

The works that have been selected by the curators of this exhibition show a contemporary approach to pre-war aesthetics. Harris’ sculptures open a new perspective onto contemporary discourse about the value of avant-garde artists and early modernism. The viewer is able to situate Harris’ sculptures on the edge of modernism and conceptual strategies thanks to minimal and pure forms. Rowena’s sculptures also remind us of futuristic and utopian objects of Russian and German avant-garde artists from Constructivism to Bauhaus. To create works that look like architectural elements, futuristic cars or Bakelite telephones, she uses materials that imitate marble, expensive stones, noble metals. But if you look closer you’ll see that these elegant shapes are mockery. Lino, painted MDF and plaster are contemporary equivalents, poorer, less durable, affordable. However those materials express our contemporary world and are more authentic nowadays than a sculpture cast in bronze.

All sculptures were made in 2010 and were part of Rowena Harris MFA Diploma in Goldsmiths College.
