Lucas Pottier’s installation for Schwartz Gallery has been developed site-specifically. The exhibition space is the starting point of his work, following Daniel Buren’s definition of an in situ work : “any formal event caused by a particular aspect of a determined portion of the space”.The particularity of the place that struck Pottier and on which he chose to develop this project is the complete absence in the exhibition space of any opening to the outside of the building, meaning the complete absence of natural light in the main exhibition space. This raises the question of adding artificial light and this question in turn forms the basis of a work developed in situ.

Pottier’s installation is a series of twenty-four components measuring 2400 mm tall and 750 mm wide. They are constructed around a wooden frame and covered with cardboard on the outside to isolate the light distributed within the circle and mark the fragility of the device as opposed to the structure of the space made of concrete and metal. On twenty-three of these twenty-four elements, the surface facing the inside of the circle will be covered with mylar diamond for light reflection. The twenty-fourth element will produce the light which is then passed between everyone of the other twenty-three elements and comes back to it. The elements are placed on a virtual circle whose diameter is determined by the spacing between the three columns of the main space and whose center is the center of the central column.

The elements are oriented in a manner that might seem erratic but whose reason is to preserve the chain of light. The gap between regular elements will not allow the viewer to penetrate within the circle, since this would disturb the light scattering, but it is large enough to allow us to observe the interior. This project also speaks about the problematic of interior and exterior, inside the building, inside the gallery/ outside of the light source and attraction source of the space. The installation presents a way of conceiving the work where the space that provoked the work ends up revolving around it and shows more reference to architectural artworks such as Bernhard Leitner’s le cylindre sonore, or Tadao Ando’s meditation space concrete architecture.
