'Misericord is an exhibit, a tableau, a collaborative presentation incorporating the work of two artists, Jay Cloth and Cathie Pilkington. Like the excessively ornamented ecclesiastical structures of the title, Misericord is a licentious space hosting a heterodox collection of images, an elaborate framework into which sculptures and pictures are recursively nested.
Jay Cloth’s profane, iconic collages are wrought from vintage colour lithographs. Cathie Pilkington’s work is a kind of meta-crafting, deploying techniques and imagery from the collective unconscious of painting, sculpture, cheap souvenirs and children’s books.'
Neil Walton

Space Station Sixty-Five (SS65) are as pleased as Punch to have commissioned artists Cathie Pilkington and Jay Cloth to make this collaborative exhibition, Misericord, curated by SS65 directors Jo David and Rachael House.

Pilkington and Cloth create an intense response in the viewer, almost to the point of overload, like holding down all the keys on a church organ, all our buttons are pushed at once. Their work teeters on the edge of grotesquery, but never tips over into absolute parody or pathos.

Now we may see what has come forth.
For this exhibition, Cathie Pilkington has created a provisional sculptural booth, a tallboy constructed of found objects, bedsteads, and pegboard. This purpose-built erection holds together disparate objects, tall tales and cock-and-bull stories, a series of niches, nooks and crannies, creating a sanctuary which is the site of furtive activity, home to an ambiguous presence.

The title Misericord, from the Latin word for “mercy”, is a secretive, decoratively carved ledge for clergy to rest their bottom on during long church services.
