The protagonist is a doctor called Peter, an interesting very amoral character, who's discovered when he was 16 just after the war that his father was German. (So, obviously it's a big jolt for him to discover that his father is not the affable Englishman married to his mother but an East German political dissident with whom she had a brief affair in the '60s). Peter travels to Leipzig and falls in love. And from this point in the story onwards I was absolutely gripped.
A friend gave me this book, it was left behind when she moved into her new flat and she was going to throw it away. I'd never heard of Nicholas Shakespeare but it turns out he's an amazingly gifted writer with a lot to say about love and politics.
