James Salter, Light Years

Having read a NYorker profile of Salter I ordered a bunch from Hackney Library http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2013/04/out-loud-first-rate-but-not-famous.html. I loved this book, although at first all the short sentences seemed hokey and hemingwayesque in a bad way. After I read the intro by Richard Ford, I realised I probably misread the story, and in fact it is a condemnation of unexamined lives, but it DID make me want to go to dinner parties and drink odd 70s cocktails, which is a testament to its goodness. Stays with you like a good party.
