The Death of Peter Roebuck

Peter Roebuck was well-known cricket journalist and media pundit, of the 80's generation (say, contemporary of Ian Botham). He spent a lot of his time in Australia writing for the local press and covering test cricket tours. On Sunday his suicide in South Africa was announced (where the Australian cricket team are currently touring). It's unlikely Australia's appalling form precipitated this state of affairs, or at least not as a decisive factor. But at the same time, no one seemed in any doubt that this was an act of suicide, obviously brought on by private pressures. The South African Police immediately issued a statement discounting anything suspicious in the circumstances. I've taken this feed from the ABC.net News, but it's on most networks.

But of course, such an instant disavowal like that only confirms suspicions!

And sure enough, in following stories such as this, it turns out the SA Police were in fact questioning Mr Roebuck about certain sexual allegations with minors (of which he had a history) and actually they WERE PRESENT IN HIS HOTEL ROOM WHEN HE THREW HIMSELF OUT OF HIS 6TH FLOOR WINDOW!!!

Sorry. What was that about 'no suspicious circumstances', again?
