Cinematic Visions @ Victoria Miro

Went to see this show at the weekend mainly because I have been waiting to see new work by Inka Essenhigh for ages. I really like her style of painting, and her piece; Daphne and Apollo is great. A nice blend of the graphic, cartoony, automatismesque with painterly brushwork, subtle tonal shifts and beautifully deep colour made it a piece worth waiting for. My two favourite things; Japanese Manga and Surrealism combined, sort of.

It is an ok show too. Some ok work. The expanded space is still amazing despite the endless clime to the top floor. Don't really see how all the work fits into this theme of Cinematic Visions, despite the co-curation of Hollywooder James Franco. In the chronological v thematic debate I think this one lost out to Tate Britain's rehang which I enjoyed more. But the first room concentrating on portraits works well with probably the shows best work by Eric Ficshl in a good spot. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye pops up here too as she seems to be doing so often at the moment, with a huge influence of Manet in her work. Upstairs close to the Essenhigh, Hidden men and lost monkeys by Jules de Balincourt is a nice painting too but that's probably all that's worth mentioning.
