Manet at the Royal Academy

Postby Joff » Tue Feb 05, 2013 10:39 am

Manet was one of my adolescent favourites, I was impressed by his slick handling of paint, like a photo but painty innit my teenage brain said to itself. So I was looking forward to this show. But let's be clear: this is a shit show. Two of the best works in it can be seen in London anyway, and there are lots of really very mediocre paintings. An eye opener that Manet too churned them out, blocking in a bunch of portraits with salon insincerity and leadenness.. A couple of nice paintings from Boston end the show, but really this is not an impresssive selection of the grand master, and the old fogies are getting short changed.
