Gillian Ayres at Jerwood Gallery Hastings

it's a very beautiful gallery with the large windows framing the sublime sea. Architecturally really very perfect and they show plenty of painting, so good on them. there is a fashion to show old timers now, perhaps the galleries have realised that there's gold in them there old hills, and of course a large back catalogue to sell off once they've hyped them up, but hey it's better than the cult of youth. Ayres's old paintings from the 1950 look pretty good, perhaps any largescale painting from the 50s would look good here, perhaps not, but there's incident and mark and mess and colour which keeps you looking.
