so everthing is performance, therefore nothing is performace, doing stuff is not performance except in the broadest least helpful sense. searle fail,

He seems a bit fixated on performance (performance anxiety?) lately. In the ICA panel on the Crisis in Criticism, he kept saying his criticism was 'performative'. But 'performance' in this sense can only be judged from a script or score of some kind - that what makes it a 'performance'. Literature neither needs nor provides such handy little recipes. Therefore criticism is not performative, merely poorly or well practised according to talent and opportunity.
