Stuart Cumberland at The Approach Gallery, Four circles

(disclosure: another friend)

Saw this show on a quiet afternoon so got to spend plenty of time gazing at the paintings.I always feel uncomfortable hanging round too long in commercial galleries which is bad.

Cumberland circles are beautiful, relying partly on an ablity to fill space with attractive shapes, and also on the difference in size between the big olympic ring circles and small benday dots. Simple things, and bright in their single colours. They hum on the walls.

They are made using stencils, and Stuart talks confidently about all the stuff behind them in bad boy with art history tones. I don't buy into this stuff, but you need some schitck to be an artist so why not? Most of us, including Stuart, just want to make really good paintings, and need something to keep us going.
