marlene dumas at frith st gallery

the best show I saw in day of art (full disclosure: she was in the free art fair which I organised, and the work she gave away was on display in the the corridor of this show!).

Crucifixions, amy winehouse, osama. Sounds like a terrible student show. But. It was good, she is always fighting her natural figurative facility by brushing and dabbing and not painting too much paint on the canvas. The portraits have weight, and the crosses make you think of sculpture, the flicking and dabbing create intensity and sometimes magic. You need to see them in reality before you judge them as images. Prefer them to Richter.

It's not the painting she needs to fight but her Munch-like drawing. :?

Thought the paintings were dwarfed by the huge brick walls and they were not that effective anyway. Messy, washy, blotchy painting which lacks energy. Dull emotionless portraits of well known figures not that dynamic. I'll take Degas in the dark anyday...
