A sort of Night to the mind @ Arch 402 gallery

Contemporary painting. Uninspiring phrase. Usually a jumble of styles, paintings of images of abstract and figurative painting of the 20th century mashed up with a twist. E.G. Mondrian but in camouflage, or late Picasso but without the dying energy. Stuck in a fun house of images, the contemporary painter cannot escape back into the real world, or even into their own fantasies. Phil Allen's painting in this show is his usual thick and thin paint. That works. The various other samplers and messers are miss and near miss. Nowhere do you feel touched or moved or transfixed. But if you look closely you will get a little aesthetic buzz off some of them. What if a painting made you feel like you had entered someone elses head and seen their world as processed by their brain. How cool would that be? Each painting would be different and not just an easily deconstructed hash of images of art.
