Wilhelm Sasnal At Whitechapel Gallery

"In a visual culture flooded by photographic images, Sasnal’s work attests to the continuous spellbinding power of painting. "

In the wall text we are told he choose which photos he paints from carefully. That's a relief.
He is a hyped German-style Polish painter, a few gestures, an unfinished bit, a little photorealism, and wow you have a profound mediation on history, images, paintng etc. Not really very good. Influential on a lot of MA students who like paintings that look like they are not trying too hard.

Yeah, what we used to call Cazh (short for 'casual').

And there used to be a good slice of Tuymans in the earlier stuff as well. Photos dissed, a little too artfully. If this be painting, pass me that fire axe Eugene.

Sassy is cute but decorative, like you say, inspiration for the MA classes: all dressed-up with nowhere to go.
