I am ambivalent about Hockney, I think he falls somewhere short of very good painting, but these reviews are very harsh and judgemental, in a way that the same newspapers weren't about Damien's spots and other recent high profile shows.. Painting which is hard to do well, seems to provoke an outbreak of high standards that for other art are ignored. Critics (guys and girls who write stuff about art for newspapers actually) will be happy with a lyrical description and no conclusion for most art stuff and it seems unfair, although in this case the overall score is probably correct, to single out Hockney for this weird return to being critical.
