Damien Hirst Spot paintings at gagosian

Postby jasperjoffe » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:42 pm

Yawn, inevitable shock horror coverage. Decoration for rich people, What a con, assistants, 100000000 spot painting, They're just spots etc etc etc . They have to be written about because everyone else is writing about them, even though the very point is that they look quite nice, no more no less.

Not really painting - just design (and randomised at that).

Which was sort of the point of having others produce them.

But even as design, circles or blobs in semi-random colour combinations (see Richter's colour charts for precedent) don't say much. Even as a lame riposte to the Minimalist world of stripes and grids (Noland, Stella), spots come in a poor and very late third - like so much of Hirst's career.
