Homeland is quite entertaining to watch, a bit gripping. Our hero, a captured soldier, has become a terrorist after watching 82 kids blown up, that's the maths, one white american will kill the VP if he blows up 82 arab kids, one of whom we have got to like and watch die in his arms in a single episode (you can imagine the calculus of the scriptwriters working out how they could keep our marine sympathetic). Then there's the torture and other violence, our heroine electrocuted for our pleasure, our hero beaten etc.

Ok I am used to rubbish entertainment using sex and violence to thrill, but something about the cynical use of real recent events to drive the cruddy plot, and titillate us with death and pain is just too cynical about this. And the idea that it's somehow sinister for our hero to pray and say arabic words (cue scary music or whatever), add to the repulsiveness of this sick entertainment. So to sum up, the show is racist, yucky, and sentimental: great tv.
