Re: Han Ulrich Obrist in New Yorker

Actually it’s a pretty good profile of the hyperactive one – and suitably long. :D But since my tastes almost never coincide with HUO or Obi’s - he’s not really someone I take an interest in. :| His career seems like an object lesson in schmoozing and art world networking, but I don’t see it having ...

Neo Rauch: ‘At the Well’ @ David Zwirner NYC

6th November – 20th December Mention of Rauch in the Burgert review reminds me that Rauch also has a show on and although I sort of said I wouldn’t write about him again, I’ve decided to take a peek, if only for comparison with Burgert. The artist is of course famously prolific and the current show...

Jonas Burgert: Stück Hirn Blind @ Blain|Southern

14th Oct – 22nd Nov Rising star of the Berlin scene apparently, Blain Southern gave him a show at their Berlin branch in 2012 and now reintroduce him to London audiences (he’d previously shown at Haunch of Venison in 2009). I’m assuming prices continue to rise; the artist’s comments hint as much. Bu...

Deux Jours Une Nuit - Two Days One Night

The latest offering from Belgian auteurs, the Dardenne brothers, Luc and Jean-Pierre, and by their standards amongst their slightest. I give it six. Re: Where are all the great painters?

It's also worth pointing out that the latter half of Rembrandt's life was lived in pretty much obscurity and poverty - 'greatness' or 'success' was only conferred in retrospect. Then there are artists who swam against the tide for most of their lives like Vermeer, Blake, Van Gogh and Cezanne who als...

Re: Where are all the great painters?

I think looking for ‘greatness’ is a game best left for historians or those looking back. Contemporary painters do better to look for work that reflects their lives or worlds in particular, dare I say, original ways. That’s what brings painting to life and makes it exciting. The current painters I a...

Absolutely! The comparison with Kiefer and the Goodman show of Richter are a rare alignment of the stars and worth a review in itself. Maybe the cracked surfaces are the result of sub-standard materials? Things were tough back then and a lot of the emphasis was on 'faktura' - facture, so he strove for a deliberately worked surface. A strange addition for Miro , I would have thought. Paul is a fairly dour, traditional painter for a gallery frequently in the thrall of New York and a general splashy presence. Slow plaintive ballad sung passionately by the drippy looking, but clearly articulate Dare. It reminded me a lot of folk music, except he accompanies himself on keyboard rather than an acoustic guitar. The lyrics are very poetic without being too precious, so in the end i was sold. :)
