caleb crain necessary errors

You have to like crain for winding up debotton. Google it. This well reviewed 90s American in prague coming of age book is slow with rather fiddly prose but it's worth sticking with. . Good on youth friendship and being gay in a mostly straight world. Softly spoken but resonant.. I ordered a budvar ...

Re: vermeer and music at the national galley

http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/vermeer-and-music just ended. One of the points I am making is that I pay close attention because I think I am looking at a Vermeer, and am rewarded for this looking. And then I wonder if the same qualities could be appreciated on close observa...

vermeer and music at the national galley

Just a few paintings not in the national anyway. But still fascinating. Where does vermeers magic lie. There is the patchiness of projection. Of course that doesn't matter. There's pattern and sharp edges and the occasional perfect hand and the odd fluffed one. There is good light trapped hundreds o...

Frances Ha by Noah Baumbauch

Having read the usual worshipful chattering classes PR puff about Noah Bumfuck, masquerading as intelligent journalism in the New Yorker, I was looking forward to this, despite misgivings about it starring NB's GF Greta Earwig, who I have found uncharming, nay excruciatingly twee in the past. I was ...

DIG FOR VICTORY at the Rattlesnake

As someone who knows very little about music, a friend's invitation to this gig was of mainly sociological interest. The R Snake is a largish American style bar on the fetid sewer of fauxny themed restaurants and bars known ironically as UPPER Street. DIG FOR VICTORY are two guitarists, one self eff...

Royal Academy Summer Show

Is there any point in reviewing it? It's for I guess fundraising for the RA, to sell a bit of work for the artists, to continue a tradition enjoyed by the middle aged and classed. A jumble of work, scrappier hang than last year, most of it makes you question the point of art, looks like a rather obs...

The middle class's horror is worth eating it alone for! It's not chicken, that's why they changed the name etc they shriek. This is 40

Another awful Judd Apatow movie. What is fascinating, like a car crash, is the shorthand used for quirkiness, humour, love, relationships family. Where do the soulless cliches originate. Presumably in the lives of Judd and friends. Certain tropes of overly explicit (not in the sense of shocking, jus...

ALL THAT IS by James Salter

After you've read a few of any author you get comfortable with the themes or repetitions. This and Light Years are my favourites. Salter leaves you longing for lunch with someone you're attracted to, a cocktail, rain, swimming, those sort of fugitive pleasures.

The Sportswiter by Richard Ford, and lay of the land

Reread. Always thought something of the poor mans Rabbit/Updike. The search for the American horny everyman, the joy in suburban/small town living, the existential detail. Baz Gatsby versus old one with Robert Redford

Although crass in places the new Gatsby has some life to it. The old one makes the jazz age seem like a quiet tea party. Di cap is quite good, especially when shy and funny with daisy, and if baz had more talking bits he would have come close to a great film. The parties are more fun in the new one,...
