Re: Claire Denis' 35 Rhum.

I think I once watched a boring film by her about royals or set in the past or some such, and there were some good bits and some sexy bits which made it bearable.

Bridget Riley at The National Gallery

These paintings mess with your eyes, ziggy zaggy, clashy colours, they are surprisingly good and lookable at. Op Art as it was once called says something essential about what painting and art can be: visual!

Sofia Coppolas Somewhere

Not a big fan of lost in translation. This sticks in the head, with the cool nothing happening, lingering too long on not much, feel of video art, it takes an obvious subject, the emptiness of celeb shit, and somehow despite all its rich and famous lifestyle porn (look at that hotel swimming pool) g...

Geoff Dyer versus Jonathan Franzen

To avoid celebrating too much, I read a lot of these guys over xmas. Some observations: Franzen is whiny. Dyer you'd like to be his friend and take drugs with him or at least play tennis. Franzen has produced the better book: The Corrections. In essays Dyer is funny, Franzen you just feel like you'r...

Cezanne at The Courtauld

Cezanne leaves the canvas showing through in places, as though to say here is how a painting begins, he fills up his wonky figures with brushwork to show you the end. In the middle there is Cezanne rhyming marks and shapes and scribbles, like Van Gogh getting paintings to do what drawing can, keep a...
