whiplash a film

Very good. Seems at first trad genre sgt major type film. But as the drum beats on it transcends the guy overcoming the odds genre to be much stranger and stronger. See it and feel the beat.

Never looked at dkorn before. He's very good. A sort of pared down West coast matisse. Lots of thoughts about the edge and surface. Back and forth with figuration. Good to see the royal academy showing something somewhat off the beaten path.

brueghel in vienna

Don't miss. Had forgotten how great the seasons were. The spring light streams into the historic kunst museum. Room after room of great paintings. No time for them. Must see brueghel. There they are. More and many. Hunters in the snow. Time stopped in two places. The straggly dogs and hunters gaze a...

MARLENE DUMAS at Tate Modern

Rather disappointed, to repeat my pun, much Munch, little bite. She draws well, and the facility is used over and over again to beguile with the eyes, while the rest is expressively distorted in drip, colour, or shape. Seems all too easy after a while, like graphic art. Usual bumpf that it all means...

Re: Frank on Netflix

Really enjoyed this, found it refreshing fun entertaining and quite moving. Relieved that it was not a biopic of Frank Sidebottom (remember as a child being perplexed by his appearances on TV) and was more an odd band film.

The ads got to me. Ltd time only. Looming over the grimy streets. I had to have one, was kept waiting by some onion rings. It came, a bit saucy, raw onions good, need napkins, I saw a whole cupboard of them in the back.

Rembrandt again at the Nationa Gallery

What's everyone looking at. Mainly older white middle-classish looking people looking at the old master. What are they looking at? Some are listening to the history on their Walkmans. Egon Schiele at the Courtauld Gallery

Schiele. Always found him a bit teenage, perhaps because he died at 28. There's something there, especially before he got too stylised/manga. He really put the vagina front and centre, confronting the stuffy viewer who must pretend that he/she is not interested. His focus is clear, but the women he ...

Not really trying to resurrect greatness as a concept, but however which way you name it, I mean really good, interesting, sums up their times, connects to the human spirit, awesome, cool, wonderful, etc. In an easy word: great.

Why you are a bad painter

Why you, me, and almost everyone you know is a bad painter 1. You were better at art school because you got informal and formal feedback from tutors and students. Occasionally you listened to it. 2. You're not very successful, therefore you're not very successful. You remember the student who you th...

Re: Where are all the great painters?

No. I think there are plenty of artists trying to be great (or whatever synonym they use) painters, and they don't need to do it in the style of Rembrandt. I don't think the drought is a result of technological changes.

Where are all the great painters?

Some very rough calculations led me to decide at least one per year was created before the 20th Century. Given the increased population and longevity, there should ...

The govt art collection selection is often the best thing at the whitechapel. The mix of sculptures and "ethnic" sculptures on some old wooden palettes, while not earth-shattering is good to look at, and makes you think about the different things.

Memoir. Quite sad. Although adored by various male luminaries, they rarely satisfied. To be a woman in last century was to be groped and patronised, and it seems she was rather lonely in the end.
