Re: James Lee-Milne Diaries 1942-1954

I think I'll wait for Jamie Lee Curtis' memoirs. Which should at least have more nude scenes.

I will go and see this one, although my hopes are not high. Maybe Clint is past it. Reports slam the thing. Those multi-plot numbers are tricky. Cecile is getting on and knows when to take the money. Sigh.

Re: Sean Scully

So how come he lives in Germany, now? I got the part that he was passive in the decision, but still, then he goes on about all the things he's not passive about, but we never get back to WTF he's doing there, wherever it is - somewhere in the German countryside (near Ludwigshafen?) For years he was ...

Re: PaintersNYC

Trouble is, we're just not attracting enough contributors (unlike PNYC, which had a ripe crew). This may be because we're based in London and not NY (the same thing happened on LondonPainting), or it may be, as is often pointed out, that blogging peaked in 2007 (according to hits stats, advertising,...

Yeah I'm sort of fascinted how the Stez finally made the cut. In the age of Photoshop and morphing (mightily! rangers!) this stuff looks flat footed, luddite.

PaintersNYC

PaintersNYC was a blog dedicated to painting exhibitions in New York. At first, it dealt only in artists based in New York, later in artists from anywhere. It began in November 2005 and petered out in July 2008, for reasons never explained by its administrator, who used the tag of Painter. It was b...

Re: John Adams (HBO series)

The series did go on forever. I think that has something to do with HBO's programing formats. But the writers also had a quite a few axes to grind. The treatment of Benjamin Franklin is quite outrageous.

You're clearly a bitter man Jim. Tait may be a bit over-rated, but I don't see him as being in the same class as Condo. Nor is he as well entrenched in the market. I don't think it's worth specialising in the vastly over-rateds either. It's enough to call them on it as opportunity arises. My pet hat...

For critics, it's better to be interesting than right

This is the title from Jonathan Jones' current blog @ The Guardian. Like almost everything Jones' says, I find it utterly wrong. John Adams (HBO series)

Does it still count as TV if it's just a DVD? Well anyway, I was watching that HBO series of some years ago - John Adams - great revisionist American History - except for the wobbly camera operating. Re: George Condo

The blending of cartoon with vigorous gesture is a recurring ideal in painting. I date it to Rauschenberg’s early 50s collages, but maybe further back to Schwitters, who preferred to just tear them kurtly to schwitters. Anyway Saul started out trying it, Guston ended up trying it, de Kooning glimpse...

Re: George Condo

Okay so it’s not really fair to label him as late Neo-Ex, when New York painting proceeds by 1978’s New Image Painting and Bad Painting (the Marcia Tucker version – a New Museum show, naturally) to arrive at its own idle caricature and parody. And the East Village trend (of 1983-4) is mainly for ‘Ba...

Contemporary Art Daily has excellent coverage of shows at NY, LA and many German galleries. It allows comments, but prefers them to be positive. When they get too pointed (even when not personal) they delete them. Worth looking at, but don't go there for the conversation.
