the inbetweeners 2

The tv show is very funny, the movie less so. Still funny tho, but with all graphic dicks, shits etc, sometimes adding, sometimes taking away in their literalness, and the elongation exposing the other characters thinness. Still the gap year trustifarians are pleasantly skewered. The audience cracke...

Adam Begleys Updike Biography

Love Updike. Apart from a few gems, found this bio boring, like most bios. Because a writer transforms experience into the magic of words. A biographer then tells you which bits are strictly true in dull prose.

BOYHOOD by Richard Linklater

Am a big fan of Linklater's before the sunrise series, so was maybe hoping for too much from this. The first half was pretty good, after a while I wasn't so much impressed by the real time lapse stuff (after all aren't movies about suspending disbelief, and our imaginations mean we can believe a man...

Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club

Entertainingish film, not profound or especially visceral despite the subject, somehow you never feel the sickness, or even a sense of mortality. Interesting the Matthew McConaughey phenomenon. having watched a lot of superhero films lately, my fave remains captain America, tho this one by the debased standards of these things wasn't bad. I wish we didn't have to see them all in 3D which adds almost nothing to the visual enjoyment of the films. Where superhero films bother with a plot, rat...

Bad Neighbors is one of the worst films I've seen

Terrible. No fan of Seth Rogen formula. This is clumsy unfunny rubbish. Not good bad. Just bad bad. Let's see: none of the characters are anything but cookie cutter clichés (cute sweary woman, schlubby kidult man, muscly frat guys, uh that's it) I make them sound more complex than they are in the fi...

richter polke at christies auction house

http://www.christies.com/privatesales/richter-polke/ 1. Is there something depressing about shows by auctioneers, naked selling of museum-quality show? 2. Great moment of painting coalescing into painting from photos. Richter/Polke shamelessly reveal the source (though Degas Sickert etc did some si...

Elena Ferrante

Great stuff from the lochness like pseudonymous Neapolitan author. My Brilliant Friend favourite so far, raw, violent, real, exciting about friendship, rivalry, our sexist century (ies), and Naples. Less keen on Days Of Abandonment, a bit too Kafka for me. The Lost Daughter is brilliant, will make y...

Matisse Cut Outs at Tate Modern

Some Thoughts: 1. The show is overhyped. Veronese is a much more important show for artists. 2. The cut-outs are static, without the shifting, brilliant, amazing genius of his paintings. 3. The best of the big ones remind me of Abstract expressionists like morris Louis 4. If he had been able to he w...

game of thrones

The hype got to me. Watched first two episodes of new season. Having rejected it in past for being stupid and wooden. It's pretty much the same as I remember it. Lavishly violent in a nasty sadistic way with impenetrable silly dandd plots and anachronistic sounding dialogue. Will probably watch more.

Veronese at the National Gallery

Veronese show is wonderful. It's upstairs not in the basement Sainsburys, and the paintings breathe in light filtering in from above. Also it wasn't busy. Poussin and rembrandt at the national gallery

Poussin did some sexy pictures, nymphs satyrs etc. The Nat Gallery primly/wittily says the satyr is hiding his excitement behind a tree. They are delicate, filled with their triangles and colour rhythms, and with time softened, and dreamy. Onto Rembrandt, overexposed, but if you can see past the cru...

Zmas (xmas for the zth time) I hate Zmas. Kehinde Wiley at Stephen Friedman

Despite their garishness and cursory technique these paintings have power and presence. They're make use of sheer repetition of detail (as did Velazquez) and the extraordinariness of how people look. The paint is not attractive in itself but the paintings have enough dazzle to keep them alive.
