Re: adrian searle on wilhelm sasnal

To deal with the content, all (good) painters like Tuymans sound the same, the same agony. Always find it depressing, but that's just a childish desire to be unique... Wish painting could be more open, less a specialised compulsion, but guess that in its results, the show, it becomes available to all.

the dying animal by philip roth

roth writes with his usual effortless reading clear good prose but this book is weak. The love object (breasts) are so ludicrous without even being funny, and the final tumourous end is so bad as almost to be funny. Pity the dying male.

everything will be alright by tessa hadley

not as great as london train, somehow the postwar setting is tedious like all those borefests set in the past beloved of the contemporary novelist. it all comes together for a good last 1/4. though the writing is also less pellucid than other hadleys.

Paul Auster Sunset Park

How the mighty have fallen. As usual with Auster it's readable, but only that, a man with greater storytelling powers than new ideas. So shallow somehow, all the characters cyphers. Oh he can tell stories, that's some talent. But where's the life?

MY Father's tears and other stories by John Updike

His last book of stories. The usual themes, aging, death, sex, small town, looking back to childhood. All the more precious because he is gone now. Especially interesting are his high school reunion stories, which crop up regularly in his oeuvre.

Mothers Milks by Edward St Aubyn

It's hard to feel too sorry for posh people who don't get the inheritance they wanted, but maybe that's his point. The scenes from the children's perspectives are funny but not quite on the money. Sour, a little funny, and very fluid prose.

advice on criticism from John Updike

1. Try to understand what the author wished to do, and do not blame him for not achieving what he did not attempt. 2. Give enough direct quotation — at least one extended passage — of the book's prose so the review's reader can form his own impression, can get his own taste. 3. Confirm your descript...
