Jim James

Initially I resisted this MOR offering from former hard rockin' guitar hero JJ, but I've come to love the straight out tenderness. 8-) Is it still possible to write - much less sing - the wrenching romantic ballad? Jim reminds me a bit of Paul McCartney, with a voice the equal of even the mushiest s...

Après Mai – Something in the Air

This is an intensely guilty pleasure. While I might only score it five or six with some sobriety, any film that details a painter’s seduction into the film industry in the early seventies and includes scenes like queuing outside The Electric Cinema in Portobello Road for an obscure late show/ all-ni...

Re: perfect burger

Gauche. For starters, what is going to hold this patty of finely chopped (minced?) steak together? You might press it firmly together with your hands, but once in a pan or on a grill, under heat it will just fall apart without a binder of say, beaten egg. Then it will only have the consistency of a ...

Damian Stamer @ Freight + Volume, NYC

Courtesy of a Re-title feed - the guy has form but is new to me. Here . I'm interested I suppose because I'm doing black and white paintings at the moment, vaguely derived from photos - and black and white photos are currently a big part of Damian's work. They're medium to large and pretty tricky bu...

Re: Australia at the Royal Academy

Lotsa reviews for this one though - mostly mixed or really negative. Still - 'no such thing as bad publicity or a bad review', they say. But I think the idea of an exhibition encapsulating a nation or continent is a bit silly. And what do people really expect? A succession of waves of Europeans appl...

Peter & Kerry - One Thing

This single is a couple of years old now but still sounds great. It's one of those catchy little love songs that can get stuck in your head, which is great if you have to spend all day in a drudge job :) You Tube has a couple of versions, the acoustic original and a remix - I prefer the remix. :D

Artists' Peer Assessments

Today I’m getting hot under the collar about the recurring issue of supposed artists’ peer assessment, or artists as talent scouts for other artists. Dark Dark Dark

Minnesota band noted mostly for lead singer Nona Marie Invie's haunting vocals and lyrics (although I don't know that she's the main song writer in the band whose line-up can be as many as eight). They've been around since 2006 but I only recently got hooked. Here they do Something For Myself . :)

Re: mediocre painting(s) sell for lots of money Francis Baco

I think it's in part because it's a portrait of Lucien Freud (School of London double whammy). It's not my favourite Bacon (a George Dyer or Isabel Rawthorne would get my billions) but it is from the 60s - his golden period. :ugeek:

The artist died in 2004 but his work surprisingly continues to circulate, often in public galleries. I confess to being gradually won over, almost in spite of Donald Buy-Kuspit’s book.
