Bonnard at the Tate Modern 2019

As you get older, you feel like you are seeing the same shows in the same cities by the same artists, sometimes in a couple of cities if you move around, they move with you. That doesn't matter, really great art outperforms nostalgia. I remember a big Bonnard show at the old Tate, didn't love it the...

Transit by Rachel Cusk

Brilliant! Hope Cusk gets mores out like this and Outline soon. Not sure about the Man Ray covers though. The books read like life, fresh and witty. Hard to do justice in this clumsy review. Occasionally her stories about builders and hairdressers have a hint of middle-class fantasy. But read this.

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2016

Full disclosure: my photo was rejected for this! One thing I wonder as I wander among all the high def pictures of people with sorry lives is Does an interesting/tragic subject make a good portrait? I liked the picture of a girl on her mobile phone because it was ordinary and not super sharp. Is pho...

Beyond Caravaggio at National Gallery

https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/beyond-caravaggio

One of those shows where the headline artist has a few paintings, and the rest are under the influence. Still it's a perfectly agreeable show of chiaroscuro. And the Caravaggios do stand out.

old tate modern galleries

You can wander around looking at some good things (trying to block the sound of clicks and beeps from digital shutters) and for once the welling hatred of TM is not there. Bravo ...

Alex katz at serpentine gallery

Not his best. Scrubby paint doesn't do much. The colours are a bit grimey. And the cool calligraphic images blown up or repeated don't zing like i remember. Perhaps an off day for me looking. I missed milton avery.

Peforming for the camera TATE MODERN

http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/performing-camera Not very good. A third of the pictures are of unclothed women, which is a bit retro (even if it's often naked women for some other noble purpose). There are lots of dull photos of interesting things (at the time), in black fra...

Joy a movie

Actually not bad. Apart from the terrible voiceover, Jlaw and De Niro are good, and refreshing to have a female protagonist and no romance, the suburban US life is well-realised in its 80s glory.

Giacometti at National Portrait Gallery

Bad Painter. Good Sculptor. I loved the lumps, small bronze mountains, of men with their heads in skinny profile. A kind of dimensional head fuck. The paintings looked sub-Bacon, very dated feel, just the same existentialist style applied again and again. The composition static, the figure bang in t...

World goes pop at Tate Modern

I hate the tate modern, oh it's good that there's a big modern art museum in London don't get me wrong, but the whole place reeks of contemp(t) for the art itself and respect for moving people around and selling souvenirs. The world goes pop isn't very good, a rag bag of pop art from around the glob...

The Age of Adaline

Not the double life of Veronique, or Benjamin button, but the sort of hokey nonsense that I enjoy. Sonia gets three stars. Agnes gets one. Strangely the wall plaque refers to sonia in the first person. Agnes really is thin. Just wobbly pencil and pastel bands. Sonia has more meat in the soup.
