From: art market Category: Art Date: 17 January 2010 Time: 02:01 PM Review: He seems to be influenced by the myth of the independent artist going off to be serious in a foreign country (gauguin). Or perhaps by the false premise that engagement with the mass media somehow invalidates what you do as an artist (it only does if it does, Warhol managed pretty well). His lack of engagement with sucking up is self proclaimed and I am sure he is pretty licky to the higer echelons of art worlds. He can perfectly easily work on some really good paintings in Hackney and only show them when they're ready. Being in Taihiti, woops Trinidad, is no escape from the market and there more than anywhere he will find himself a fake and a tourist (read Naipaul for this), I doubt very much that he is not famous fails to make up for the fact he will be feted for being rich.
