From: Vastly O'Paints Category: Art Date: 17 January 2010 Time: 12:43 PM Review: In what way is he (C.O.) not influenced by the Art Market?, he sells his work for high prices in fancy galleries...You've got me there, but I was responding to the charge that Ofili undervalues his good fortune or, if you will; acknowledging the positive aspects of his approach and I am remarking upon the apparent level or degree of influence compared to other comparable practicing artists perhaps this seems irrelevant and I admit it is not a particularly salient point but then, such terms as Fancy Art Galleries and High Prices - these are variable by degree of fanciness or pricetag, you might as well question the whole purpose of having a point of view. Conventional painting? again, by what degree ? For my part the last part of this question, Whats the difference ? The answer - All the difference, I have to conclude that if an artist appeals to an audience it is possibly because some form of recognisable communication is activated between the two not because the artist is (for example) blatantly screaming for media attention or working in some kind of void although, that can somehow seem "authentic" in the right circumstances. I cannot define the level of Chris Ofili's not being influenced by the art market, what would you reckon?
