More and more the irascible old yorkshireman, the show presented the voice-over talking about the directors journey (Sigh). Hockney is a great character and really cares about painting, and it was interesting seeing his assistant helphing him set up his easles.. But, but, but, his paintings are just not good enough, somehow despite his fantastic graphic skill, his impressionisty colours, his myriad approaches, they still look like illustrations, pictures which employ a style for visual joy, but don't demand a style to be created. Yes, maybe if Hockney keeps going with outdoors painting (and avoids those jigsaws of little canvases making big ones, why not just paint one big one), then he will break through his own talent and into somewhere new.
