Credit Anna M Baranowska Spot the star architects of the future and see ideas for a brand-new market in Canterbury, during the south east Festival of Architecture Who will be the next Norman Foster or Richard Rogers? There are several opportunities to identify new ‘starchitects’, at exhibitions of work by students of architecture during the south east Festival of Architecture in Canterbury The Festival is co-ordinated by RIBA South East and the Solent Centre for Architecture + Design, across the south east from 20 May to 28 June. From Saturday 6 to Thursday 11 June, you can visit Canterbury School of Architecture at the University for the Creative Arts on New Dover Road, to see work by graduating architecture students. From Friday 12 to Saturday 20 June, Kent School of Architecture will run EXIT 09, the fourth End of Year Show that the School has run since it launched in 2005. The showcase exhibition is at the School from 9am to 5pm. Call 01227 824695 for details. Ideas for a brand-new market within Canterbury’s city walls are the subject of Market Town, an exhibition of proposals by fourth year students at Kent School of Architecture. The students traced the ancient markets of the city and studied to the current realities of food production, transportation and culture in Canterbury. The result is a refreshing look at the future of food within the urban context. Market Town will be exhibited at Canterbury Castle on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June from 10am to 5pm. The exhibitions are just a few of the 90 events during the south east Festival of Architecture which, with the theme ‘Better Places, Better Spaces’, is taking place across the south east. Most are free of charge. The Festival coincides with Architect in the House, the popular scheme that that lets homeowners get expert advice from an RIBA Chartered Architect in exchange for a donation to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.
