If you were to compile a list of the best paintings made since 1945 it would be plain daft not to include several paintings by Francis Bacon. His later works weren't as strong and many, many of the paintings exhibited in the big Tate show would not have been selected by Bacon himself. But, when all is said and done, Bacon's best work is astonishing.
