The words jar, you are overly aware of the author striving for effect, and the source material is transparently taken from shallow research on the net or a couple of lunches with relevant folks. Theroux's book is a silly thriller, you imagine he probably once watched or made a documentray on boxing and then combined this with a middle class journalist character, and bingo you have a fast moving work of genius. Makes you wonder, nepotism, nah, lots of people called theroux write bad literature.
