You put your cursor at the point where you want to start highlighting and it assumes for you that, rather than just the first letter, you want the whole word or the whole word plus a bit of the punctuation that follows it or, to be doubly annoying by also bollocksing you up the other way round, it decides you DIDN'T actually want the word you started with and leaves it off so it ends up still in your text, now denuded of the context that you were allowed to highlight and delete. Please tell me I'm not the only one being driven nuts by this. It's like trying to stick live worms on the screen.
