So what's the point of writing memoirs if you leave all the interesting parts out. He just has a lot of anecdotes about famous people and people no one has now heard of. Sad Amis. Too many drinks and lunch and well crafted stories. Memoirs are meant to be revelatory. Amis, so much talent, and wasted most of it to be one of the lads. Fear of pretentiousness has never done so much damage. The whole problem with post-war english lit is that the writers avoided being french.
