Review:

Time and again I flick through my collection of worthy art house movies and wish I’d selected some
escapist trash before my subscription to LoveFilm ran out. So, seeing ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ in
Cash Converters the other day, for the bargain price of £2, I thought “here you go girl, an American
feel-good movie for a night when you absolutely need to zone out”. I don’t have a TV you see. Six
months later, after a draining day responding to a nasty stomach bug, I clicked play. This film has
no redeeming features. Plot spoiler ahead: woman is fed up with her life, perms her hair and starts
wearing make-up, meets man, they get married.
Okay, lots of American movies are kind of like that but there’s a bit of a crisis somewhere in the
last half and everyone finds out a bit more about themselves in the process - there’s the
possibility of some suspense or a little twist. This had none of that. The only ‘fuel’ are the gags
about her corny Greek family who run a restaurant called ‘Dancing Zorba’ and roast lamb on their
front lawn. I expected to find the Greek gags far more offensive but dumb as they were they didn’t
bother me. It was the complete lack of plot or originality which had me wondering how this managed
to be a hit when it came out a few years ago (I’ve just read it was the fifth highest grossing movie
of 2002). Next time I’ll bite the bullet and watch ‘Requiem for a Dream’.
