Guy Colwell, who was part of the Bay Area underground comics wave of the seventies, is known for his ripe, stylized human figures in socially conscious pieces. With a fondness for Hieronymus Bosch, his artwork has connections to Surrealism, Social Realism, and Comic Illustration and always carries great weight when it comes to maintaining a critical eye on the world around us. To a number of collectors, he is considered the most daring and outspoken artist to come from the political upheavals of the Vietnam era. Colwell, in his tight, linear style of illustrative surrealism, never fails to portray mankind’s brutishness, yet through the critical eye he casts on the events in the world, he manages to transform hopelessness into hope. Colwell has continuously exhibited his artwork at a range of venues—art galleries and other public spaces, since his high school years in the early sixties. His work ranges from paintings, drawings, murals, illustrations, and comic books to courtroom sketching. As a professional muralist, his murals can be found in many locations in the Bay Area. His drawings and paintings have been utilized/commissioned by many publications since the seventies. His worldwide reputation as a comic book/graphic novel artist/writer has been based upon several series of comic books intended for adults, some of which have been translated into as many as seven languages. As a quick sketch artist, Guy Colwell has also worked as a stringer for the San Francisco Examiner, KRON, KPIK and other outlets covering court appearances at such trials as the White Panther Shootout, Patty Hearst, Sara Jane Moore, Manson Family Members, San Quentin Six, Dennis Banks and S.L.A. Members. His most controversial and powerful recent social realist and surrealist paintings will be the featured work in this show. A reception will be held on Wednesday, August 29, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at City Arts Gallery, in Visual Arts Building, V119. The public is invited to attend. The City Arts Gallery is located at City College of San Francisco, Phelan Campus, 50 Phelan Avenue, Visual Arts Building. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 AM to 3 PM, and Tuesday and Wednesday evening, 6 to 8:30 PM. For more information, please call (415) 239-3157.
