You can also go for an amble in the surrounding gardens, dotted with bizarre sculptures and dead flowers. The church site is represented by some old foundations, slowly sinking into the clay soil. The adjoining priory still survives thankfully and is set out in the usual fashion. i.e. smelly wooden floors, old beds, billboards that lower 6th form students read and write. But not without its charm, some volunteers are on hand to walk and talk you round the home and its previous occupants. Might it adhere to the National Trust? Certainly not, I was told. Its owner, the Sussex Archaeological Society, houses the aforementioned secretary and other dignitary in the top floor. I'm thinking of running for president and creating a republic.
