Review:

Charming and simply written. So basic I thought it had been revised and abridged. In facy James did 
revise it later in his life, and there are two versions, the later more typically Jamesian. A romance in 
the style of Stendhal or someone, and a ripping read.  American are can-do, Europeans devious 
snobs. Nowt has changed.
