return to worldwidereview.com,
the home of critical reviews
From: ed Category: Art Date: 22 January 2007 Time: 02:39 PM Review: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/art/2007/01/friendship_comes_with_the_terr.html People review their friends, acquaintances, and artists they think people think are important, happening, cool, news. Maybe they are semi-candid. But the problem for most artists is not bad reviews, but no reviews at all. One thing worldwidereview, with its open access and biggish audience, tries to solve is this lack of oxygen which occurs at the lower levels of the art world mountain. Even crummy art is important to someone, usually the person who made it, and it won't get any better without criticism. The effort which goes into being an artist deserves an audience and a review, maybe it doesn't, but getting one probably makes the gallerist and artist feel a little less lonely. At the summit, the successful art-moutaineers, the scalers of contemporary art-everest, also could do with uncompromised (by acquaintance, commerce, the need to be positive and constantly promote something, or mere laziness) judgement. We, at worldwidereview, really want art to be great, beautiful, fantastic, and think criticism might help. So please spare some thoughts for a change... boss.
