From: Category: Art Date: 10 January 2007 Time: 02:26 PM Review: http://www.serpentinegallery.org/whatson.html Damiens put some stuff he owns on show. The gallery is jumping, the folks are drawn by Hirst's brand power. Mates like Sarah Lucas and Angus Fairhurst, and Gavin Turk. Banksy. I don't even know whether they're all friends, maybe they hate each other. But then I guess he wouldn't be showing them. There are jokes by Richard Prince and Sean Landers. And old and new masters Francis Bacon and Jeff Koons. Some young artists. Lot of Lambie. You catch Hirst's drift: he likes the macabre, funny, and offensive (offending someone probably hopefully). His taste is that of the intelligent pissed off nihilistic pompous teenager. The result is a show that looks like a pretty good degree show. The only outstanding pieces are Koons' vacuum cleaners. They are incisive where Lucas's cigarette covered hoover or wanking BMW are just elaborate one liners. How boring to say that, when many of the paintings already amit that eloquently, but it's true. A mix of straight forward messages. Young children will enjoy the flayed zebra and aforementioned car.
